As today’s tecnology developes constantly on the other hand goes in to the trend of downsizing the product dimensions.As an example electronic equipments can be shown, their sizes are getting smaller but their functional features are increasing.Because of downsizing the product dimensions manufacturing and engineering firms had to design with precision and manufacture products with smaller dimensions.Reverse engineering is a method of preparing existing product at most sensitive and correct way for the production by comparing cad model with measured data of the product.Parallel to the developing technology 3 dimensional measuring systems have come up to the level of performing high precision measurements on smaller scale pieces.

Piece below has a diameter 55,50mm and a hight 4mm.
Some of these proceses are ;
- Placing STL data correctly on the XYZ coordinate system
- Filling small holes exsisting on the data according to the surface curvature.
- Obtaining sections line ( iges) from the interested areas according to the X,Y,Z axis.
- Performing dimensional comparison of the piece tobe produced with existing cad data and preparing reports. 5 . Forming an automatic surface on the data according to the customer requirements
- Modelling the STL data.
Application of smaller pieces
Piece in the picture has a diameter of 9,5 mm and height of 14 mm, angled hole inside the piece has a diameter of 0.73 mm.
- Performing 3 dimensional optical scanning on the piece , then.
- Obtaining cad model by using STL data

Figurine soldier has very small dimensions ,dense and different forms which make masurement impossible.Because classic measuring methods would be insufficient for this work , optical scanning was performed on the piece with the sensitivity of maximum 5 μm deviation.

Last example, ornamental metal coin has 22,8 mm diameter , hight of the letter characters is 0.14 mm.
