20 YTL worth of Ataturk portrait was chosen as a Concept for the 40 meter high Ataturk Mask.
Statue work made from clay model by Sculpter Harun Atalayman well-received by the project owners who are the Municipal authorities of Buca, and the decision is made to proceed with the project taking this work as a base.
Project; turned over to Defne Muhendıslık , after making a copy of statue finalized by Harun Atalayman from an epoxy mold for the measurement and engineering works , to transfer this copy into the computer environment with optical scanning method.

- Transferring the form of model ,prepared in size of 1 meter, into the computer environment,
- Capturing the form on the computer model and generating getting datas necessary for the structural analysis,
- Determining the location of the new model and generating the plan layout of the hill with previously obtained datas,
- Making necessary adjustments to fill the surroundings of the statue with the natural rock and transferring the natural rock forms in to the computer environment depending up on the positioning on the hill,
1. Transferring the model intothe computer environment
Sample pattern taken from hand made model transferred in to the computer environment with the help of Breuckmann opto-TOP HE system. After choosing proper camera for a prepared model size of1 meter and viewing area ,3 dimensional measurement of the prepared model was made
in away that having all geometric details but eliminating the small mistakes caused by handmade fabrication . At the end of this measurement; scan data which is named point cloud, prepared in the STL format. These datas will constitute a base for other phases like scaling, generating form, determining structural elements.

Measurements ,obtained as a result of optical scanning , enlarged for 4m and 40 m models. On the CAD data; Cross-sections extracted at the radial and polar axis . These cross-sections and contact points generates net structure which was used for identifying the form of statue and designing the main guidelines of the carcass structure inside the statue. Technic drawings of these cross-sections and necessary measurements prepared and extracted as reference datas for the statue(s) to be made. Cross-section profiles were extracted in 1 meter intervals not deviate from accepted design and to look like exactly the model of Ataturk when the construction started. These sections were taken as templates and the profiles ,used in the structure ,produced acording to these templates.

Obtained net structure was prepared to be used for identifying large scale form as well as the static analysis of the carcass structure. Mr. Prof. Dr. Hikmet Aydın calculated the material to be used on the statue ( structural tests completed ), profiles types , thickness and a carrier system design by using this net structer.
3. Defining the location of new model with hill datas , generating hill layout plan
Measurements about the location where the statue will be placed were obtained during the creation of clay model. These measurements were the datas of the hillside from the base of the statue to the hill top ,taken with laser pointer Datas between the ground where base will sit and the hill points were combined with the datas obtained from clay model. Best suitable place was identified on the base ground.

4. Integrating naturel rock views and the surrounding of the statue in harmony with environment .
Distance between the statue and the hill has to be completed statically as well as visually and integrated with the environment of whereabout. Additional work was done by sculptor to add naturel rocks on to existing model to fill the gaps. Also this model transfered in to computer environment by taking measurements. With this preparatory work; it was tried to foresee that how much of the naturel rocks would be used as seen on location and what kind of construction is necessary to associate with the hill.

Mask , completed at Caldıran district of Izmir Buca Municipal, astounds those who see it with all it’s magnificence. To understand the size of this monument from the photos, you can look at the people who are about the height of average 1,75m standing next to the mask of the Ataturk in picture 15. An Appeal for the monument has been made to the Guiness records to be registered as of greatest mask.
